British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
