Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
