In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
